A STREETCAR NAMED "DESiGN"

"TRAMES D’ÉNERGIE: Weaving Tomorrow’s Currents"

Prize-winning entry — A Streetcar Named Design, Saint-Étienne, France

A Streetcar Named Design is an international competition held in Saint-Étienne during the Biennale du Design, inviting designers to rethink the relationship between public space, mobility, and the city’s design heritage. For the 2025 edition, participants were challenged to propose visionary concepts for the future of the Saint-Étienne tramway corridor within a brief of "Recources: predicting tomorrow".
My project, TRAMES D’ÉNERGIE, reimagines the tramway not only as a route of movement but as an active “woven” energy landscape. The concept transforms the urban ground plane into a textile-inspired system of photovoltaic, kinetic, and conductive strands that collect and redistribute energy generated by everyday flows. By visualizing these currents through subtle luminous patterns, the project celebrates Saint-Étienne’s textile legacy while proposing an infrastructural network that is both functional and expressive.
